Many years after the first papers on lifting schemes appeared by Sweldens et al. , also a book completely devoted to this topic is about to appear. After a brief introduction into classical wavelet transforms, the book introduces second generation wavelets and the lifting transform.

It goes beyond the basic features of lifting as it discusses in detail various ways of non-linear lifting, adaptive lifting and stability of lifting. This is not only done in a rigorous mathematical way but also with many figures/schemes illustrating the various processes. In this way the book is not only of interest for mathematicians working on this topic. Moreover, the book focusses also on a broad audience of researchers, lecturers, graduate students and practitioners in signal processing, image processing, computer graphics and numerical analysis.

The book ends with a chapter on various applications of second generation wavelets, the authors have been working on in the past few years, like image retrieval systems and computer graphics.
