Royal Netherlands Naval College
VACANCY for a PhD Student

The Royal Netherlands Naval College is part of the Faculty of Military Sciences, a higher education institution supervised by the Dutch Ministry of Defence. The Royal NetherLands Naval College (RNLNC) provides the science curriculum for navy and air force officers. The Navigation Department of the College currently has a vacancy for a PhD student in the field of mathematical positioning.

Project description:
In the recent past positioning systems like GPS have found their way to different systems in our society. Well-known examples are navigation systems, which are used in both the navy and the air force already for a long time. These systems translate received data from satellites into coordinates on the earth's surface or in the air above.

The central focus of the project will be to develop signal processing methods to increase the quality of the positioning system when using such method on the satelite data. Possibilities for increasing the quality can be found in several ways of using signal processing methods, e.g., by means of integrating data of different positioning systems (data fusion), by noise reduction or by selective processing subband cosing. Implementing the derived algorithms in a (MATLAB) toolbox for operational use is being pursued.

Requirements
Candidates are expected to have a university degree (MSc) in Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Geodesie or Physics. In-depth knowledge of mathematical signal processing, in particular wavelet analysis or time-frequency analysis, is a prerequisite. Experience with simulation software such as Matlab is preferable. The chosen candidate will be an enthusiastic person with good communication skills, especially in English writing. He or she must be capable of working independently and in a small team.

Additional information and application
The salary will be assigned according to the Dutch university salary system for PhD students. The project duration is four years and should be finished by defending a PhD thesis at Delft University of Technology. The location for the research will be the RNLNC in Den Helder, which is located 70 km north of Amsterdam on the coast.

For more information about the RNLNC please visit www.kim.nl

For further information or to apply, please e-mail your application letter and detailed resume to Dr.ir. P.J. Oonincx at RNLNC p.j.oonincx@kim.nl.

Note: the application procedure is initially restricted to citizens of NATO countries.
