Question: Book: Joint Time-Frequency Analysis

Being new to wavelets and the like I am looking for introductory literature. The book mentioned above seems to be standard, however, it is about 7 years old. I wonder if the newer "Introduction to Time Frequency and Wavelet Transforms" by Shie Qian serves for the same purpose.
After the having become familiar with the matter I would prefer the book to be a reference as well - I am not sure if the "Introduction..." is such a type of book. Could anyone please give me advice on which book suits better for the stated purposes?
