The answer is:

There is a misprint in the on-line help of the wnoisest function and
in the associated description shown on page 8-190 of the User's
Guide (1997). The line which reads:

The estimator used is Maximum Absolute Deviation / 0.6745, ...

should read:

The estimator used is Median Absolute Deviation / 0.6745, ...
^^^^^^

We will correct this in a future version of the Wavelet Toolbox
and the User's Guide.
