Thesis: The Enhancement of the signal to noise ratio in telecommunication
systems

Abstract

This work deals with methods and algorithms used in telecommunication
to improve the signal to noise ratio. The motivation for the work is
the necessity to improve the signal to noise ratio for the
transmission of signals at great distance or for the protection of
signals against different natural noise sources. A few methods,
derived from the Donoho92 method based on the use of the
soft-thresholding filter are investigated. One of the most important
results of this thesis is the justification of the whitening effect of
the discrete wavelet transform. So, if the signal that must be
transmitted is perturbed with an additive coloured noise, this
perturbation becomes, in the discrete wavelet transform domain, a
white noise. Hence, to improve the signal to noise ratio it can be
used, in the wavelet transform domain, a filter for the rejection of
the white noise. The statistical properties of the soft-thresholding
filter are investigated. The method of Donoho is reformulated to solve
the problem of the enhancement of the signal to noise ratio in the
communications context where the power of the transmitted signal is
known, and the power of the noise that is added in the communications
channel is not known. An algorithm for the adaptively maximisation of
the signal to noise ratio by the selection of the optimal threshold of
the soft thresholding filter is presented.

Some simulations of this method, with important results for the
telecommunication field and some comparison with other signal to noise
ratio improvement methods are presented too.20
