#28 Answer: Mathematics of Wavelets (WD 7.4 #16)

Regarding mathematics texts that deal with the requisite mathematics
for wavelets at a level suitable for engineers, by far that best
suggestion that I have had was from Josefina Alvarez of New Mexico
State University.

Josefina suggested:

"Linear Operator Theory in Engineering and Science" (1982)
A. W. Naylor and G. R. Sell, Applied Mathematical
Sciences Series 40, Springer.

The book integrates set theory, topological structure, algebraic
structure, Hilbert spaces &c., and positively bristles with relevant
(and readable) references. It is also written in a tutorial style
without being patronizing yet maintaining succinctness. This is the
book that I have been looking for. At ~600 pages it is short enough to
be unwieldy, yet long enough to cover many topics at a sufficient
level of depth beyond mere regurgitation of definitions as is the case
in many introductary texts on wavelets.

For those who are interested in analysis, I have found the following
to be an enthusiastic and informative exposition which is a useful
read in conjunction with the above:

"An Introduction to Mathematical Analysis" (1993) J. Lewin
and M. Lewin, International Series in Pure and Applied Mathematics,
McGraw-Hill, 2nd edition.
