#18 Job: PhD Studentships at Napier University, Edinburgh, UK

A number of PhD studentships will be available within the
Department of Civil and Transportation Engineering, at Napier
University, Edinburgh, starting in September of this year. Two
topics are on offer, one specifically looking at fractal and
wavelet analysis of crack patterns the other of a more general
nature, these are:

1 - CHARACTERISATION OF CONCRETE CRACKING USING BOTH WAVELET
TRANSFORM AND FRACTAL GEOMETRIC ANALYSES: This project aims to
extend current work in this area and use both fractal geometric
techniques and wavelet analysis to characterise both crack
profiles and internal crack surfaces. The work seeks to develop
new methods of non destructive testing using crack
characteristics. The fractal work involves the geometric
description of the crack geometry in terms of an effective
Fokker-Planck equation. The wavelet work involves the use of a
variety of continuous and discrete transforms to both grade the
material and locate areas where subsurface inhomogenieties may
exist.

2 - WAVELET TRANSFORM ANALYSIS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING: This project
aims to investigate the use of the wavelet transform, in a
variety of civil engineering signal analysis applications
including non-destructive testing signals; rainfall times series;
turbulence data; crack pattermns, and ocean surface drifter
trajectories. The focus of the work will very much depend upon
the interest(s) of the applicant.
