We will aim for the right balance of theory and applications. The workshop
course gives an overall perspective of the field, following the program
of four successful workshops by Professors Strang and Nguyen in the US.
The topics will include

1. Analysis of Filter Banks and Wavelets
2. Design Methods
3. Applications (from Lecturers and Participants)
4. Hands-on Experience with Software

The program will develop these four key areas in detail:

1. Analysis

Multirate Signal Processing: Filtering, Decimation, Polyphase
Perfect Reconstruction and Aliasing Removal
Matrix Analysis: Toeplitz Matrices and Fast Algorithms
Wavelet Transform: Pyramid and Cascade Algorithms
Daubechies Wavelets, Orthogonal and Biorthogonal Wavelets
Smoothness, Approximation, Boundary Filters and Wavelets
Time-Frequency and Time-Scale Analysis

2. Design Methods

Spectral Factorization
Cosine-Modulated Filter Banks
Design by Constrained Least Squares
Lattice Structure
Ladder Structure (Lifting)

3. Applications

Audio and Image Compression, Quantization Effects
Digital Communication and Multicarrier Modulation
Medical Imaging and Scientific Visualization
Computer Graphics and Image Generation
Analysis of Electrodynamic Problems

4. Simulation Software

MATLAB Wavelet Toolbox
Software for Compression

The goal of the Workshop is to be as useful as possible to all

PLEASE bring to the workshop any application areas that you would like to
hear discussed. This is a very active workshop !

This text is already in class use in many Electrical Engineering and
Mathematics departments. It was chosen to accompany MATLAB's Wavelet Toolbox,
which will be the simulation software at the Braunschweig Wavelet Workshop.


Sufficient time will be available for discussions both between lectures and
training sessions as well as at the workshop reception on monday evening and
at a banquet on tuesday night.


You will receive detailed information about driving, trains and airport
connections as well as accommodation in Braunschweig in a later announcement.


The tuition includes textbook, banquet, reception and refreshments in the
breaks. For registration until October 20 it will be

DM 750,- with company support
DM 550,- with university support
DM 150,- for graduate students using their own funds

After October 20, if places are still available, there is an additional fee
of DM 200,- for late registration (DM 100,- for graduate students).
