#25 Question: Wavelets and DSP implementations

Dear colleagues and waveleteers,

Has anyone successfully implemented a bi-orthogonal wavelet based
black and white still images compression algorithm on a DSP processor
such as an ANALOG DEVICES SHARK ADSP21xxx ? Both a good compression
ratio and processing time are of major importance for the research
programm I'm engaged (PSNR > 20 dB, Cr > 20, t < 500 ms). I have
already investigated some solutions with MATLAB and the calculation
cost is prohibitive for a near real-time DSP application : entropy
coding, VQ, VQ+RLE+HUFFMAN ...... On the other hand, the VGA B/W still
images (640x480 pixels) I have to compress and transmit with an UHF
tranceiver are uncorrelated and of poor quality (noised, blurred, low
contrasted). For these reasons, I think it's difficult to use a VQ
method based on stastical dictionaries.
