This tutorial aims to focus on the recent developments of subband and
wavelet transforms for digital communications. The fundamentals,
linkages and distinctions of subband and wavelet transforms will be
presented. The design methodologies for subband and wavelet
transform bases will be introduced. Then, the state-of-the-art
applications of subband transforms and their extensions in
interference excision, spread spectrum communications, discrete
multitone (DMT) modulation, code division multiple access (CDMA) and
low probability of intercept (LPI) communications along with subband
(wavelet) image/video compression techniques will be presented. The
applications specific requirements and their connections with the
fundamentals of subband and wavelet transform theories will be

First part of the tutorial will visit the fundamentals of wavelet and
subband transform theories. This will help the audience to appreciate
the linkages as well as the distinctions of these popular linear
transform techniques. In the second part, we will present the
state-of-the-art digital communications applications of subband
transforms. These recently emerging applications will be interpreted
from subband transform theory point of view. An evaluation and
assessment for potential improvements of these digital communications
techniques will be made.
