Answer 1:

You may want to try the famous wavelet shinkage denoising method proposed
by Donoho et al. The algorithms are available as a matlab toolbox called
WaveLab which you can get from http://playfair.stanford.edu/

I studied this subject recently with Carmona and Hwang, and we have a
couple of papers, to appear at IEEE Trans. Sig. Proc., available at
