Question: Wavelet transforms of sparse matrices

I'm taking the 1D wavelet decomposition to each column of a huge and
extremely sparse matrix representing a linear operator. The resulting
matrix becomes more and more sparse as I increase the number of
elements and increase the filter length. If I do the same with a dense
matrix I get the opposite result. For the former case, is there any
way to keep the original number of elements the same (or about the
same)?

Thanks
