Preprint: Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows ...

Title: Numerical Simulation of Turbulent Flows in an Adaptive Wavelet Basis

Abstract: Many turbulent flows have a sparse representation in a
wavelet bases since they are dominated by coherent structures. Up to
now, wavelets have been used only for analysis or compression of
turbulent data obtained by measurements or calculated by other
classical methods. We recently have devised an algorithm which
directly solves the Navier-Stokes equations in an adaptive wavelet
basis using operator-adapted interpolating vaguelettes. This short
note presents first results and a comparison to those of a classical
spectral method. The approach seems to be promising as it reduces the
number of degrees of freedom and might allow easier modelling.
