Meeting: Call for papers, SPIE96 Denver

CALL FOR PAPERS (250 word summary due to SPIE by 8 January 1996)

4-9 August 1996, Denver, Colorado, USA

APPLICATIONS OF DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING, XIX
Special Session on IMAGE COMPRESSION
Session Chair: Pankaj N. Topiwala, MITRE Corporation

Image Compression is an enabling technology whose importance is
rapidly growing in the information age. While international standards
have been established for both still and moving images in a variety of
formats and bitrates, based essentially on the Discrete Cosine
Transform, an exciting debate currently rages on the relative merits
of subband, wavelet, fractal, VQ, or other approaches. This session
will primarily focus on lossy still image compression, and papers are
invited to address this timely debate that bring new ideas and fresh
perspectives. An important goal of this session will be to probe
compression performance vs. complexity. The approach to compression
taken need not be contrained in any way.

continuous and significant expansion in recent years. The
usefulness of this technology is apparent in many different
disciplines covering medicine through remote sensing. The advances
and wide availability of image processing hardware has further
enhanced the usefulness of image processing.
