Title: Wavelet Phase Filter for Denoising in Tomographic Image Reconstruction

Abstract: Image reconstruction techniques such as position emission
tomography (PET) can be used to study the physiology and biochemistry
of the human body in a pictorial manner. However, some of these techniques
are characterized by a high level of noise. Wavelet methods can smooth out
noise while preserving significant features of images. But wavelet modulus
maxima based schemes are sensitive to the variance of noise. In this study,
the properties of wavelet phase are explored and applied to tomographic
image restoration. In comparison with conventional filtering methods, the
wavelet phase methods significantly improved the quality of reconstructed
tomographic images.
