Meeting: Workshop course on wavelets, filter banks, and applications

WORKSHOP COURSE ON WAVELETS, FILTER BANKS, AND APPLICATIONS

at San Jose State University January 13-16, 1995

organized and taught by Gilbert Strang and Truong Nguyen

This announcement with housing information also includes the schedule
of topics and notes on reservations. I want to emphasize that the
four days will be very active. Please bring questions and applications
for discussion, if we can be helpful. There is total opportunity to
listen, to participate, and above all to get a firm grasp of this
important and rapidly developing area. We will have a session on the
Toolboxes now created for wavelets and filter banks.

Before the housing may I also mention the deposit. This is to reserve
your place, and fully refundable. Participants with company or university
or government support (please ask for support), and also participants
from abroad, may prefer just one check later (not credit card). Please
email or mail or phone to let me know any institutional requirements.

We are fortunate that San Jose State has no classes in January. This
means plenty of space and a great welcome from the SJSU faculty.
Note that January 16 is Martin Luther King Day.

The Holiday Inn has offered us a $65 daily rate (single or twin).
Their phone is (408) 998-0400 and fax is (408) 289-9081.
You should mention the Wavelet Workshop and the rate.
Also available are dormitory rooms in Royce Hall at $21 per night.
Call in advance (!!) (408) 924-6180 or -6160. (355 South 8th Street)

The topics will include

Digital Filters: Analysis and Design
Matrix Analysis: Toeplitz Matrices and MATLAB Implementation
Multirate Signal Processing: Filtering, Decimation, Polyphase
Wavelet Transform: Pyramid and Cascade Algorithms
Daubechies Wavelets, Orthogonal and Biorthogonal Wavelets
Audio and Image Compression, Quantization Effects
Transient Detection and Radar Processing
Non-Destructive Evaluation, Digital Communication
Perfect Reconstruction: Cosine-Modulated Filter Banks
Spectral Factorization and Transmultiplexers

This workshop course will NOT assume an extended background in
filter banks and wavelets. It is developed from an MIT graduate course
emphasizing applications of the theory. Participants are invited to
suggest problems and possible applications for discussion.

The workshop will begin Friday morning January 13 and end Monday
afternoon January 16 (holiday). We will meet in the Engineering
Auditorium at San Jose State University, convenient to freeways and airport.

Expenses and Reservations: You could return a copy of this announcement
to Room 2-240 MIT Cambridge MA 02139 with a $50 deposit payable
to Gilbert Strang or to MIT. The deposit is fully refundable;
it will reserve your place in the Workshop. Please indicate name,
address, phone, and e-mail:

* $750 paid by company or institution
* $580 paid individually
* reduced rate for graduate students/postdocs

Please indicate if you are a graduate student or in a similar position
applying for reduced expenses. All applications are welcome.

The Workshop will confirm your deposit and respond to all questions
using our e-mail address gs@math.mit.edu .

We hope that this Workshop will be outstanding. Its goal is to be
as useful as possible to all participants. We are receiving
applications from all over the world, and a valuable part of the
experience is those contacts and friends.
