Question: Wavelets to characterize surface roughness

Hallo wavelet experts!

In my Ph.D. Thesis (Quantification of the
microrelief roughness) I want to characterize
the roughness of soil surface measured at a
resolution of 1 mm x 1 mm. In a GIS I build a
digital elevation model. To quantify the
roughness I use fractal geometry (so called
triangular prism surface area method) and
geostatistic methods (variograms, robust
variograms).
None of this algorithms delivers a useful value
to distinguish between different soil types with
visible different roughnesses of the surfaces.
So - my question is: Is it possible to find
with wavelets or wavelet-transformation one
characteristic value for the roughness of the
surface?
It would be very kind of you if you could help
me, send me a comment or send me your opinion
and ideas.
