The two preprints are:

"W-Matrices, Nonorthogonal Multiresolution Analysis, and Finite
Signals of Arbitrary Length" (M.K. Kwong and P.T. Peter Tang)

"MATLAB Implementation of W-Matrix Multiresolution Analyses"
(M.K. Kwong)


1. An elementary explanation of compact support biorthogonal
multiresolution analysis, using a matrix interpretation --
accessible without prior knowledge of wavelets.

2. Concrete examples are emphasized instead of technical formulas.
User-friendly Matlab programs available for experimentation.

3. Characterization of all biorthogonal transformation of length
4, using the new concept of W-matrices. Higher-order transf.
are also discussed.

4. Finite signals of arbitrary length, odd or even, can be
handled without using periodic extension or additional data.

5. The particular W-transform generated by the pair [-1 3 3 -1]
and [-1 3 -3 1] (which we call the quadratic spline transf.)
is shown to perform well for compression purposes.

6. Orthogonal compensation available for better performance.

7. Connection to wavelet theory is discussed.
