|Adaptive Wavelet Application: Answer to WD 2.19.
Hi, Student Jakob Hilmer,
I have read about in the Wavelet Digest that you need inputs to Wavelet
Application and history report that you are preparing.
Since I am writing my special issue/book on Wavelet Applications, I am
glad to have the opportunity to introduce to you a special idea that
is I called "Adaptive Wavelet Transforms", namely let the input data
set (say speech sound Ref. ) determine by itself the appropriate
mother wavelets for features extraction and phonemes pattern
classification. The history is short, in additonal to 20 conference
papers that we wrote, there are refereed journal publications as
 H. Szu, R. Messner,"Adaptive Invariant Novelty Filters," Proc. IEEE
Vol. 74, No.3, pp. 518-519. Mar 1986.
 R. Messner, H. Szu,"An Image Processing Architecture for real time
generation of scale and rotation invariant patterns," Comp. Vision &
Image Proc., Vol. 31, pp. 50-66, 1985.
(Richard is my first Ph. D. student, now at U. New Hampshire, EE Dept.,
this idea was to follow human visual system for multiple resolution
adaptive filters, before the word of Wavelets was coined)

Wavelets for Signal Representation and Classification," Opt. Eng. Vol.
31, No.9, pp.1907-1916, Sept. 1992.

matched filters," Appl. Opt. Vol. 31, No.17, pp. 3267-3277, Jun.

Transform for Scale-Invariant Data Classification," Phys. Rev. E, Vol.
48, No. 2, pp. 1497-1501, Aug. 1993.
 Y. Sheng, D. Roberge, H. Szu, "Optical Wavelet matched Filter
for Shift-Invariant Pattern Recognition," Opt. Letters, Vol. 18, No. 4,
pp. 299-301, Feb 1993.
FYI, there will be Wavelet Applications Conference (organized by H.
Szu. J. Crowly, T. Hopper, G. Hewer) at Orlando FL. April 4-9, 1994,
as a part of SPIE Annual Meeting at Orlando this year. Then, two
special issues on Wavelet Transforms are: 1992 Sept Opt. Eng. , and
1994 June Opt. Eng., the second one is devoted to Adaptive Wavelet Transforms.
I Wish to receive your report in the near future.
