Hello,

Potential candidates are sought for a PhD project on numerical inversion of geological processes at The University of Western Australia (Perth). The project fits into the 'Inversion In Geology' research theme developed at CSIRO Exploration and Mining, aimed at enhancing the role of geo-mechanical modelling within the Mineral Exploration Industry. Details about such research can be found at http://www.ned.dem.csiro.au/BoschettiFabio/inv_geol/main.htm, where a number of papers on the subject can also be downloaded.

The project will involve
1) mathematical inverse theory (global inversion, multi-objective optimisation and Interactive inversion, search space analysis)
2) geo-mechanical modelling
3) computer programming
4) understanding of geological processes at a lithospheric scale.
5) 3D visualisation and user interactivity

The successful candidate will be supervised by a team with expertise in both mathematics and earth sciences and will have to interact and communicate actively with staff from disparate disciplines.
