Paolo Prandoni and Martin Vetterli are happy to announce the publication of their book "Signal Processing for Communications".
We wrote this textbook taking a somewhat novel and less formal approach to the subject, based on the conviction that signal processing should be taught to be fun. The treatment is less focused on the mathematics and more on the conceptual and practical aspects but the book remains an engineering text, with the goal of helping students solve real-world problems. In this vein, the last chapter pulls together all the topics discussed throughout the book into an in-depth look at the development of an end-to-end communication system, namely, a modem for communicating digital information over an analog channel. The book is the result of several years of teaching undergraduates at EPFL in Lausanne and contains a number of "field-tested" exercises.
We are also especially proud to announce that that, with the publisher's support, we have decided to make the whole book available online. We think that information should circulate freely, and that the primary goal of teaching is to make knowledge broadly accessible; in this sense, we are extremely grateful to EPFL Press who kindly agreed to let us publish the HTML version on top of having invested in producing the hardcover textbook. In the spirit of this experiment we are suggesting a voluntary donation from readers who end up using the HTML version as a textbook. All of the funds collected in this way will be used to donate copies of the book to universities in countries that need but cannot afford such books. We truly hope that this experiment will be successful, and we hope to contribute, in however small a way, to reduce the inequalities in the access to knowledge across the world.
